New Art Laboratories Earns

KODAK IMAGECARE Program Accreditation

ROCHESTER, NY, June 11, 2007–New Art Laboratories in Mexico City, Mexico, has joined the list of facilities that have been accredited for meeting KODAK IMAGECARE Program standards for consistently high-quality negative film processing.

Initiated in 1996, the KODAK IMAGECARE Program is designed to assist laboratories in implementing processes and measurements for reliable and consistent processing quality. Program membership has grown to currently include 35 film labs in 22 countries. Admittance as a member to the KODAK IMAGECARE Program is recognition that a laboratory has conformed to the highest quality standards across operations as stipulated by the Program.

“The KODAK IMAGECARE Program certifies that motion picture film laboratories are structured to consistently optimize their services and reliably produce the highest quality results,” says Kodak’s Wendy Elms, worldwide manager of the IMAGECARE Program. “Filmmakers can now shoot almost anywhere around the world knowing their film will be processed within strict quality guidelines at member facilities.”

New Art Laboratories began operations in July 2003. The facility offers processing services for 35 mm, Super 35, 16 mm and Super 16 film formats. They specialize in silver retention and push and pull processing. The lab also provides sound, prints and various other deliverables. Management at New Art says that Mexico City is a hub for Latin American moviemaking, and the facility offers services to feature films and television productions in Central and South American.

“We consider the KODAK IMAGECARE Program an important tool,” says New Art Sales and Customer Service Manager Daniel Salazar. “By providing exceptional services and instituting controlled processes, we can confidently meet the expectations of the most demanding cinematographers. Our facility is committed to providing filmmakers with the best lab processes available and continuing to be a leading resource for them in our region.”

Laboratories in countries where the KODAK IMAGECARE Program is offered can become members through an assessment process. A Kodak technician assists and certifies lab personnel in standardizing and documenting procedures, monitoring and controlling processes, and in demonstrating an ability to follow quality control checklists. Labs are audited every 12 months, with frequent re-assessments by local Kodak representatives throughout the year. Kodak also provides training for lab personnel with the aim of achieving optimum and constant performance.

AGFA LETTER OF OPINION TO NEW ART LAB

“I was impressed by the levels of processing quality and of efficiency that this young lab has been able to reach in such lapse of time…

On my arrival, Monday the 9th of April 2007, I was given a guided tour around the laboratory, and I was immediately surprised by the clean look in all the working places of the lab. I have hardly ever seen such a clean (chemical) working environment in a motion picture film processing lab. Please, see to it that it remains like this. It’s important. Good processing really requires a clean environment.

New Art succeeds in combining a limited space with important processing capacity. It has two very performing processors. In addition, the process is very modern, combining all the latest relationships to the ECP-process, as there are:
-         Increased processing speed, using a particular kind of ECP3 processing (biggest differences with ECP2: developer with increased temperature and pH, while CD2 concentration remains low). I find this rather exceptional. Still, it offers perfect sensitometry (see below), and the low CD2 content assures clean processing and cheap developer preparation. I would not change anything on that level.
-         100% cyan dye track, avoiding sound track redevelopment.
-         Processing without first fixer.
Up till now, I have not met a laboratory in Europe where these three aspects are combined.

During my stay in Mexico, Agfa test wedges were developed on three occasions. I evaluated them when I got home. The results were very good. So, the processing should lead to optimal quality on the screen.

I also discussed the LAD-settings with New Art Lab. For CP30, New Art Lab applies LAD target values of 115-106-103 RGB. This is precisely what we advise in our technical date sheet (which can be found on the Agfa website). This combination should offer the lab the most neutral greys and blacks.”

Nuestra máquina de revelado marca Photomec, única en México, trabaja mediante un sistema “soft touch” el cual permite cambiar fácilmente entre un formato de 35mm y uno de 16mm sin realizar ajustes mecánicos que consumen tiempo y obstaculizan la operación.

DRAGONBALL

Se sabe que DragonBall originalmente iba a ser filmada en Canadá y afortunadamente favorecieron al final a México y a NEW ART LAB por sus características en locación. Se estima que sólo la inversión de construcción de sets y hospedaje fue de alrededor de 45 millones de dólares. Al menos 750 empleos se generaron durante el rodaje en Durango. La derrama económica para México y en específico en el estado de Durango fue de 60 millones de dólares. El presupuesto global de la película es de aproximadamente 100 millones de dólares. Se espera el estreno para mediados del 2009. Este título es uno de los tres grandes producidos por la 20th Century Fox en el 2008.
